Art

Our curriculum is designed to stimulate creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a way of understanding and responding to the world. It enables children to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes.

Our teaching aims to provide high-quality art education that will engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.  As pupils progress, they will be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design.

We aim to:

  • enable children to record from first-hand experience and from imagination, and to select their own ideas to use
    in their work;
  • develop creativity and imagination through a range of complex activities;
  • improve the children’s ability to control materials, tools and techniques;
  • increase their critical awareness of the roles and purposes of art and design in different times and cultures;
  • develop increasing confidence in the use of visual and tactile elements and materials;
  • foster an enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts and a knowledge of artists, craftspeople and designers.

The teaching and implementation of the Art and Design Curriculum is based on the National Curriculum and linked to topics in a cross curricular manner. This ensures that there is a broad and well-structured approach to Art.

A range of media is taught across the school, and the skills of each media is built upon each year. Each year group covers at least one artist a year to further enhance their learning and knowledge of Art. Artists chosen are from a broad range and background, some are famous, local and others are national and international artists.

See our skills progression and topic overview for further details of how our curriculum is structured.
