At All Saints C of E Primary School, we believe that the learning of a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils. They develop communication and literacy skills that lay the foundation for future language learning. They develop linguistic competence, extend their knowledge of how language works and explore connections between the foreign language and English.

Learning another language raises awareness of the multi-lingual and multi-cultural world and introduces a global dimension to pupils' learning, giving them an insight into their own culture and those of others. It provides opportunities to explore relationships between language and identity, so that they develop a better awareness of self, others and cultural similarities and differences. The learning of a foreign language also provides a medium for cross-curricular links and for reinforcement of knowledge, skills and understanding acquired in other subjects.

We offer a relevant, broad, vibrant and ambitious foreign languages curriculum that will inspire and excite our pupils, covering a wide variety of topics and themes. We use the ‘Language Angels’ scheme of work and resources for French teaching and ‘Minimus Mouse’ pupil books and teaching resources for Latin. We also offer extra-curricular language provision, with Japanese Club - exploring the language, culture and landscape of Japan.

Our aim is to foster in our pupils a genuine interest and positive curiosity about foreign languages, finding them enjoyable and inspiring. Pupils build continuously on their previous knowledge so that, by the end of KS2, they leave All Saints with the relevant skills and enthusiasm to continue studying languages at secondary school and with the potential to become life-long language learners.
